How to Use Match Lit Ignition: A Step-by-Step Guide

A match-lit ignition system is a straightforward and reliable way to ignite your outdoor fire pit. This guide will walk you through the steps to use and install a match-lit fire pit ignition system safely.

Using Match Lit Ignition

  1. Preparation: Before lighting, ensure there are no gas leaks. If you smell gas, turn off the supply immediately, extinguish any open flame, and call your gas supplier or fire department.
  2. Lighting the Fire Pit:
  • Open the gas valve slowly.
  • Use a long match or a lighter to ignite the gas at the burner.
  • Adjust the flame height using the gas valve to your desired level.

Installation Instructions

1. Selecting the Location:
  • Choose an outdoor location with good drainage and sufficient room for safe operation.
  • Ensure there is adequate ventilation in the enclosure to prevent overheating and gas buildup.
2. Constructing the Enclosure:
  • The enclosure must have at least two vents (18 sq. inches each) to allow heat and gas to escape.
  • Use non-combustible materials for both the initial installation and over time.
  • The pan and burner assembly should be recessed by a minimum of 2 inches to protect the flame from being blown out. In some areas, a 4 to 6-inch recess may be required.
3. Installing the Fire Pit:
  • Place the fire pit in the enclosure and connect it to the gas supply.
  • Ensure the gas pressure is correct: Natural Gas should have a supply pressure of 3.5” to 7.0” W.C., and Liquid Propane should have a supply pressure of 8.0” to 11.0” W.C.
  • Test the connections for leaks before proceeding.
4. Burning Media Installation:
  • Use fire-rated lava rocks or decorative fire glass.
  • Do not overfill the burner; only a 1/4” to 1/2” layer of glass or lava rock is recommended to cover the burner. Excess media can cause damage or improper operation.
5. Safety Considerations:
  • Always have a gas shutoff valve accessible.
  • Do not leave the fire pit unattended while it is in use.
  • Ensure children and pets are kept at a safe distance from the fire pit.
  • Do not use flammable materials around the fire pit.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Regularly inspect the fire pit for signs of wear or damage.
  • Service the fire pit annually by a professional certified by the National Fireplace Institute (NFI) or equivalent.
  • For troubleshooting, refer to the detailed instructions in the manual provided by your fire pit manufacturer.
